India on Saturday crossed the 4 lakh-mark as the country reported over 14,000 cases, its highest ever single-day jump in infections. For the first time, India on Saturday morning reported 14,516 fresh coronavirus cases in a single day, pushing the country’s Covid caseload to over 3.95 lakh.
However, by evening, several states reported over 5,000 coronavirus cases.
This is the third consecutive day that India registered a record jump in the number of coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile, an official said that around 54.13 per cent of the patients have recovered so far.
Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country by the pandemic, alone reported 3,874, its highest ever jump in a single day, on Saturday. The latest spike in cases took the state’s total tally to 1,28,205.
As many as 5,984 people have succumbed to Covid-19 in Maharashtra so far.
With the highest single-day spike of 3,630 Covid-19 cases, the total tally in Delhi rose to over 56,000 on Saturday, while the death toll mounted to 2,112. Delhi has reported over 3,000 cases for the second consecutive day. The previous highest spike of 3,137 cases was recorded on Friday.
Telangana reported 546 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus, while Uttar Pradesh reported 592.
Gujarat reported 539 new coronavirus patients on Saturday which took the tally of cases in the state to 26,737. With 20 Covid-19 patients dying during the day, the death toll due to the pandemic in Gujarat rose to 1,639.
Rajasthan reported four deaths and 381 fresh coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the state’s death toll and infection tally to 337 and 14,537 respectively.
India is the fourth worst-hit nation by the pandemic after the US, Brazil and Russia. According to the Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling Covid-19 data from all over the world, India is at the eighth position in terms of the death toll.
